In oldendays people used to entertain themselves by puppetshows,as ther were no t.v. or videogames.

Puppet theater was to entertain as expressed by others here, but it was also a way to express political ideas that would have been dangerous to express verbally otherwise. By having the voices of the puppets make fun of politicians or expresses political dogma the speakers were protected. They could say that the thoughts were not their own, but those of the puppets. Playwrights also hid political dogma within their plays.....read Shakespeare.
