Sometimes it is difficult to tell when they are young and of course some breeds are easier to tell than others. However, as the bird grows the tail on a Rooster will be larger, and the feathers around the neck will be longer, also the comb will probably be more pronounced on a rooster, but occasionally you just get one bird that you really do not know until it either lays an egg or crows!

A male chicken or Rooster usually has a much larger comb and waddles than the hen, they also have more colorful plumage especially in thier tail feathers which are longer, more full than a hens tail feathers and usually have some iridescence. A rooster also has "spurs" on his feet/legs while a hen does not.
