The answer above is close - but the photoreceptors (rods and cones) are actually what are being stimulated. They interpret this electrical noise (the pressure) as light. You can also see this really well if you are looking medially with one eye (towards the nose) with your eyes closed, and gently press on the lateral side (towards your ear) of your eyelid. In the medial corner you will see an image called a pressure phosphene.

Because the pressure on the transparent vitreous humor that fills the eyeball stimulates the optic nerve connected to the retina in the back of the eye which, in turn, sends impulses to the brain's visual cortex that it interprets as random patterns of light, dark and color.

Much more interesting than the dots and floating specks most people see! Either enjoy it by putting your mark first in the center square or stop rubbing your eyes hard!
