A Poobah is a person in a position of power, prestige or perspicacity - or one who behaves as though he were in such a position. The full term "Grand Poobah" comes from the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta "The Mikado," in which the Grand Poobah is a busybody in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, and has taken all the titles available for him (such as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Secretary and Grand Poobah) except for the position of Lord High Executioner.
