I've just helped two people with this recently. Here's what I told them,
Iusually just keep repeating "go to sleep" over and over. My mind tends to wander like crazy as soon as I lay down, so that helps me not think as much. After a couple minutes, my brain just gets tired of hearing it and I fall asleep...
If that doesn't work, try rubbing the bottom of your big toe really lightly. I read in some article that that can make you so calm you want to fall asleep. I tried it once and it actually worked (bet you didn't hear that one before!)...
You can also try some warm chamomile tea (sp?) or regular tea with lemon (decaf of course)... Or some people say warm milk helps, doesn't work for me personally, but you can give it a try if you like milk. Even some sugar-free hot cocoa can work...
Find a really stupid book and start reading at a random page, that might bore you to sleep...
Stare at the ceiling and concentrate on breathing really deeply then exhaling really slowly. Really try not to let your mind wander. Just let yourself relax...
Hope one of those suggestions works for you!! Good luck!

First of all, did you have coffee recently? Or any other stimulant? If so, this may not work. Try deep breathing. Make room as quiet as possible. Lie down on your back on a comfortable bed in a dark room and close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose and expand your belly first, then your lungs, and do so very slowly until your lungs are full, then breathe out very slowly, emptying your lungs first, then your belly. Repeat. Bet you'll fall asleep after 4 or 5 breaths!

Alcohol is a depressant, but it will make your sleep pattern irregular so you may not get quality sleep. Watch some baseball or something and put on some Jack Johnson

Try warm milk laced with honey. Then get into bed, close your eyes and daydream until your thoughts drift into real dreams.
