Now like when you get them taken off, do you have to wear like 2 retainers? one on top and one on bottom? And someone told me its best to have the bottom one perm. glued in. Is that a good idea?

No, I actually don't have a memory of it being that painful. More uncomfortable and awkward but those little clamping machines they have to get beneath the brace are pretty good.

No, I don't think it even rises to a level of "pain", more uncomfortable. I think the ones in the back are more uncomfortable, just because the gums get sensitive. But still not to a "pain" level from what I can recall.

Good luck!

PS - yes, a retainer for both up and down usually comes along with getting braces off. And no, I would not have it 'glued' in any way... how would you clean the thing? Very unsanitary to keep it in your mouth all the time without being able to take out to clean.

And it is SO important to wear it for the recommended time, then slowly wean off. But keep it around to wear periodically even years after because your teeth eventually will begin to crowd again and it's SO important to maintain that beautiful smile with even once weekly and nightly wearing of the retainers.

Trust me, I know. I had to get a NEW retainer years later because my teeth started going crooked again. I should have kept the first one and worn it periodically instead of having to get a new one years later!

It does not hurt at all! Your ortho will take out the wire first. Then he will detach the brackets. You will feel a slight tug -- you will definitely feel that they are coming off, but it will not hurt.

I guess on a scale 1-10, the pain is 1 or less.

It is not painful at all, but like when you got your braces on, you will have to get used to them off because your teeth will feel very slippery and all that good stuff. Relax it is a reward around the corner, a bright smile. Good Luck:)

2, 3 at worst, mostly it's just uncomfortable sitting in the chair so long with mouth open while they scrape & pop the brackets off. At least it was that way 20 yrs ago when I had mine taken off.

I dont remember it hurting. In fact it feels really good. The only thing that might hurt a little is if you don't brush your gums very well, they will be a little sore after they take out the braces.

____________
pain = 1

lots of pressure when he uses this tool to flick them off.
Feels weird/tingly when polishing the glue off your teeth.
____________
Feels really really good afterwards ... really smooth because you havn't felt your teeth for a while. unless theres some flecks of glue left on your teeth.
_____________
Permanently glueing the retainer in is good. You won't be tempted to leave it out. Just make sure you clean it properly.

If you dont' wear them then your teeth move. Its more important to keep your bottom teeth still for position stability than your top.
