Because the Koran was written in arabic and most likely all your religious services are going to be in arabic. Arabs couldn't stand having a Jewish prophet for a god so they made a new more ethnocentric religion with an arab prophet as the main guy. Arabs are better than everybody else. If you don't believe that then don't be Muslim.

Yes, as knowing and understanding the language of Quran (which is Arabic) is essential for every Muslim for his/her religion. Reading the Arabic Quran is part of the Muslim prayers, which is compulsory for every Muslim to perform 5 times for each day. Therefore all Muslims who don't understand Arabic as good as their native language, through translations, must know what is written in Quran and what they are reciting in their prayers.

At the very least you should be able to read the letters so that you may read the Qu'ran, which every muslim has to do. If you can read it in arabic, but only read the english translation (or other language you understand) next to it, then that's acceptable.

That is a product of the arabic national influence.
The same problem was in roman catholic church, with the latin bible, until everyone started to translate the bible on their native languages.

The muslims in the world should try to find a new way of incorporating islam into their native national culture, and not try to incorporate arabic culture into their native societies.

it's preferred that prayers are conducted in arabic. However, many western muslims find it hard, so they start by reading the Koran in english, then to pray they read an english translation of the prayers, then the prayers themselves spoken as arabic but spelled in english letters, for example "bismiallah alrahman alrahime". And of course, they all know the basic greeting "salam alaykum", "peace be upon you".

I don't think it is a necessity but would problem help them to communicate with fellow Muslims. Just like anyone who immigrates to USA needs to learn English to be able to communicate with those they come in contact with. I just saw a story on TV where a little boy fell to his death from a ferris wheel ride because the operator of the ride did not speak English and could not understand what the mother down below was trying to tell him.

Yes, because the Quran is written only in Arabic. To translate it is against it's teachings.
