Mormons are terrific people, as one of the above essays illustrate. I love the atmosphere they create: clean, tidy, seemingly perfect (Disneyworld, for example) Best family dynamics I have ever seen. Unfortunately, they are deceived.
No essay out of me. If you are really interested, read "The Maze of Mormonism" by Walter Martin.
And Mormons, I love you, but you are not getting your own planet upon death, and JESUS, not you, is Lord!

There are several main differences between mainstream christianity and the LDS faith (as we are christians as well) though we all have the same basic views.
The main difference is the LDS view of revelation and commuication with God. If you look through the scriptures you will find that every book was written by a prophet, that prophet spoke in behalf of God, recieved revelation, preached the gospel, and had the authority of God to do these things. There have always been prophets on the earth to recieve revelation for the children of God. The only times when there were no prophets or revelation (one of which was the few hundred years before christ came) the truth was not on the earth and men interpreted the scriptures for themselves, wrongly in all cases through time. Men without the assistance of those with the authority of God make their own laws.
We believe that prophets are needed and that there is one on the earth today. Without a spokesman or leader from god men are always in confusion. We believe that there have been prophets since the church was restored. Our prophets gives us guidance just like those of old did.
This doctrine of continuing revelation is one that most of christianity is dead set against, they believe that god has revealed all he need to reveal, that we need no further guidance.
I don't mean to be insulting but that is an uneducated and illogical argument. Parents would never leave a child without guidance, direct communication. Nor would any God that I would want to follow ,allow Satan, and those who want to completely destroy us to communicate and interact with his children but never even speak to them again. Not only that but this doctrine is failing completely. The world is falling apart, wars and hatred everywhere, another one is israel, 200,000 plus denominations of christianity all believing different things. Christians against each other on laws and government. Basic family values and honor are meaning less and less. And they suppose we don't need God's advice anymore, that the world is improving. How they believe in no revelation I do not know, nor will ever understand, especially in the worst of time, God always has prophets and direct revelation.
This false doctrine is based on a misunderstanding of the scriptures. Towards the end of the book of Revelations it says that no man sall add to the words of this book. Would most christians refuse to accept is that the bible mean (collection of books), several books in one, it is not one book. Not only that but John wrote rev before he wrote his gospel, he would be violating his own law. So if noone does add to the book of revelation they do not break the commandment. Not only that but the bible was put together three hundred years after the apostles died, there were several other bibles created with different books in them, and several books ignored that were important to the early christians.
Most christians also believe the bible to be perfect. I won't comment much on this issue, it has been completely proven that the bible is not perfect and that the translators did the best they could. But every translator knows how much is lost in translation, especially if you study hebrew vs English, it's rediculous how much is misunderstood in English. Not only that but it has also been shown that most translators of the church thousands of years ago changed the scriptures bit by bit to mold to their way of thinking, or tried to correct a previous translators mistake.
No ancient manuscripts of the new testiment or old are the same, and no originals have been found. To think that a book is perfect, especially when the book never states it is, and with so much evidence is rediculous. Not only that but thinking a book is perfect is hypocritcal, only god can be perfect, if you view the bible as being perfect you are worshiping a false god.
Another main difference is that we believe that the early church fell away from the truth a couple years after the apostles died. We call it the "apostacy". If you study history, specificlly the early church, all the confusion after the aposles were murdered, new doctrines, the Cathlic church being created, all the new rituals, the gnostic and greek teaching being interwoven in, the blood and evil the popes of the cathlic church wrought, the splitting up the the cathlic church into what is now over 200,000 thousand denominations. It is obvious the church did fall away.
The church was restored by a prophet of God, just as the truth has always been taught and restored by a prophet in the scriptures. We are that truth. Other churches do have some truth, but not the whole. This does not mean we think they will go to hell or anything though, do no misunderstand.
We have more scriptures than the bible. This is a priciple of continuing revelation. Revelation is recorded and scriptures are produced. If there is a prophet there are always new scripture. We use them all and study them all. It is a deliberate misteaching to most christians that we never use the bible or have our own, but most christians teach and believe this.
These are I believe the "big" issues that decide everything, because basiclly, this is the simple truth. If God does love us enough to give us prophets continually as he has always done, as he said he will always do. Then we are the truth, and all our believes and principles are true. Because we are the only ones who will claim to have a prophet, and the same organization of christs early church.
If you have genuine questions you may contact me about them as I can answer most questions. But no insults or accusation against the church please, I have heard them all, and I will not respond nor read them.

Many LDS theological positions do not fall in line with the Nicene Creed (a statement of beliefs that pretty much defines 'standard' Christianity'). They do not accept such basic tenets as the Trinity (one God, three Persons who each is God yet are distinct Persons) and salvation by grace through faith; they discount the importance of the Crucifixion and Resurrection...it would take a lot more time and explanation than I'm able to supply.

Mormons call themselves LDS or Latter Day Saints.
One key difference is their belief in marriage. They want to be sealed in the temple, so they can have what is called a celestial marriage. This means that the wife will be called into highest heaven by their spouse and sealed for eternity.
Another issue is that they were garments which they believe are garments of righteousness.
Some good websites to understand the differences

The Mormons follow what they consider to be a "3rd Testament" of Christ, or the book of Mormon as we know it. In this "3rd Testament" of their's, they believe God lives on a planet in our solar system called "Planet Kolob". Many other heresies and blasphemies can be found within their book. They also believe that God was created by another god, and that one day we will be gods too and create our own planets and have rule over them. They believe that their founder, Joeseph Smith was the last Biblical prophet. During his life in the late 1800's, Joeseph Smith made many false predictions about the 2nd coming of Christ. When none of his false predicions came true, alot of people abandoned his mormon teachings.

Mormons are a variety of Christian. We have faith that Christ is our savior and redeemer, that he's the only potential wherein we are able to acquire salvation, and that he's the son of God. in spite of the shown fact that, we even have faith that God maintains to talk to guy with the aid of prophets, even after Christ. i think of many different Christian church homes have a concern with that. yet Peter replace right into a prophet, and all the popular prophets do the comparable as he did: testify of Christ and only lead the church. So i do no longer see why various have a concern with that. We have faith God has spoken to many and maintains to talk immediately, that he's no longer silent and that he does not decrease his be conscious to easily the bible. We cherish and love the bible, yet as one form of scripture and not because of the fact the only understand God. related to if we are a cult. We genuinely are not to any extent further than the different Christian church. So, reckoning on your definition of cult the two all Christianity or none is. From what i've got seen, that seems to be a be conscious human beings use to attempt to scare others remote from specific church homes. There somewhat isn't plenty base for it. i'm hoping I helped slightly to respond to a number of your questions. in case you ought to any extent further, be at liberty to e mail me. besides, God bless!

Mormons base their beliefs largely on the Book of Mormon. They feel the Bible is God's Word, but that it has been mistranslated.
They believe that an angel gave Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism) gold tablets that later became the Book of Mormon.

I had 2 mormon "elders" come to my door a few years back and they got into an argument with my dad about beliefs. They must have argued in the doorway for at least an hour. Eventually they got so fed up with my dad that they walked away and said "SEE YOU IN HELL!" and my dad replied "I won't be in Hell."
I disagree with the entire Mormon religion.
