How do i open a Word doc using OpenOffice software?

See if you can right click on the file then click on the option that says "Open With". Then click on Choose Program and then choose Open Office from the list of programs given. From there you should be able to open the file.
Edit: Forgot to mention that if you're just downloading the file from somewhere like a disk, jump drive or from someplace like FileLodge, Open Office will usually automatically open it anyhow if it is the default word processor on your computer.

OpenOffice are 'almost' (but not of course exactly) similar to Word, so just open file with OpenOffice as you would with Word (check type of document you are opening).

Though you can open .doc files with OpenOffice not all features in your .doc files are recognize, especially images and other effects. You are fortunate if your .doc contains only text.
