What will endangered species do? We are depleting forest so they have no other place to go.
Captivity is the only option at this point for some animals. There are not enough of them in the wild to sustain healthy populations.
Domesticated animals have no other option. We have bred them passed being able to live in the wild. Could a Chihuahua survive on it's own? Ah, no.
You question should be: "How can we be better keepers of the animals in our care?"

When we don't care enough about them to want to be close to them. Or when some arrogant dictator with more power than sense takes them away. If you isolate people from all contact with animals it won't be long until there is no room made for them and they are destroyed or neglected. The best way to teach a child to care about animals and to be kind is to have one that is close to them that they can love and take care of. What makes you think that all animals would be better off without people? People would certainly be poorer (and I'm not talking about money) without animals in their lives. And there would be many fewer animals alive without people helping them. Don't lump the abusers/destroyers in with the people who genuinely care about animals.

when people stop hunting them in the wild. When endangered animals such as a panda numbers rise. When it is safe for them to be out in the wild without the fear of being killed by humans

As far as pets. They were bred to be pets and have human care.

Never. both depend on each other. Also a pet dog is better than a stray dog fending for himself. And on the other hand a dog is more compassionate than human beings.
