yes. its caused by an allergic reaction to the medication. as with ANY medication..it is always a good idea to "test" before you give a full dose.
some flea and tick meds are highly toxic to allergy prone animals. the other reason is an over dose, giving to much medication per #s of dog. so if say your dog weighed 90 #s and you gave a medication for over 130 # this could be an over dose.
although i know most flea and tick meds top out at 90 or over...so my guess would be an allergic reaction.

some ppl use puppy medication on cats, and cat medication on dogs..this is also very dangerous..especially for the cats, if you use even the smallest weight dosage of the dog treatment..its deadly to cats.

you might want to ask your vet for a post death analysis of blood, urine and stool, and see if they can pin point a cause.

EDITED:
just because it comes from the vet doesn't make it better, in fact the stuff that is OTC is a lower dosage...otherwise you couldn't get it so cheap! the vet stuff is more powerful...that should be obvious to anyone since it works better...it has MORE medication in it! DUH PPL USE YOU HEADS! a dog can OD off the vet brands too!

YES! Never put those collars on your dog or use over-the-counter treatments! Your best bet is to use something like Advantage or Advantix (if ticks are particularly bad in your area). We have alot of ticks but we just use Advantage and have yet to have a tick on our dog so far. *knocking wood* We used the same last year and had no fleas and only 4 ticks which we found within a day or so.

*UPDATE*

I got this information from a few vets in my area and they tell me either the pets have already died using Hartz or they come to the vets and it's to late for them. My next door neighbor's year old cat was so full of life and then I see it dragging his back legs as he was trying to walk. My neighbor said he was like that for a few days. I noticed a flea collar on him and asked her if it was from Hartz, she said yes and I said get it off of him now. She did and the cat was fine later that day. Thank God I had read about this happening, Let others know about Hartz products. So sorry about your dog.

Please additionally get your canines spayed! aside from the actuality that putting her interior the backyard places her in threat fro marauding canines finding for a mate, you're additionally putting her on the very actual possibility of coming up a mammary tumour or pyometra whilst older, the two one among that are probably deadly - so for her very own well being, spay her! Any dog can be allergic to any product just like we can. But I am hearing that Hartz is having more reactions than any other product. It doesn't work that well either.

If your dog died from Hartz, contact the company. Also there is a government website for reporting adverse reactions to our dogs and cats.

I haven't heard of any specific brands but I have heard of flea and tick treatments killing dogs, including large dogs. It's a poison that you are putting on your dog after all and poison kills. That's why I recommend people use these alternatives.
