when I've asked friends of mine who smoke this questions, they say pleasure, calms the nerves, and the like, and they are willing to accept the risks. What's your reason?

Addiction is one major reason.

I used to smoke...way back when I was in high school...
Started when I was in 8th grade through peer pressure (girl I liked smoked). When I smoked in high school, I basically just smoked socially, with friends...if I caught myself smoking by myself, I stopped smoking for a while b/c I didn't want to become addicted to it (weird, huh? But I was able to do it).
I think I liked the taste of it...the smoke, that is. Especially when I got into menthols w/ my girlfriend at the time.

Why did I quit? In my High School Jr. year, I started working out, and I knew that if I was to make the goals I'd set, then I'd have to stop smoking (and drinking)...nicotine retards the muscles from growing, and alcohol retards the bones from growing...so I quit them both cold turkey...haven't smoked since. (I'm 34 now).

I first started smoking when I stopped smoking weed. Cigarettes give me a false sense of calm, since it actually speeds everything up..but..eh. I'm not addicted..I could stop anytime I please, I've done it before for months at a time, then I start up agian because I'm self-destructive like that.

I started because at first it enhanced the buzz I got from drinking alcohol. I still smoke because it becomes hard to concentrate and I become irritable when I don't smoke.

destructive behavior stems from not forgiving yourself from events that have occurred in your life that you regret. knowing that isn't the same though as acting on it and recreating oneself.
also is important to realize addictions are symptoms of denial. denial is a ***** for most of us. good luck
