First don't panic..unfortunately its not that uncommon. Just be sure you comb through their hair very good with the special comb that usaully comes with the shampoo. Its very tedious...so it'll take awhile to section off their hair...especially pay attention behind the ears and on the nape of the neck. Wash all their pillows and sheets...and repeat in 3 days just to make sure you've gotten them all.

Ignore the posts about shaving the head and calling a doctor immediately...geeze..
If they have dark hair the nits will show up more. Get a good conditioner and put it on their wet hair and comb through it in sections. Then reshampoo with the RID. The reason you'll repeat in 3 days is because of those nits you'll still see. You want to make sure they are dead.

Ok. First of all don't freak out! I know it is gross, but it can taken care of farely easily. First check everyones hair. If anyone has it then go to your local pharmacy and buy some over the counter lice shampoo. Follow the instructions on the box. Next wash all of the bedding in hot water. You can also buy RID in a spray can that is for spraying on mattressess. Wash up all the clothing. Bag up all stuffed animals and dolls in large trash bags and store them in your garage for a couple of weeks. This will suffocate the bugs and they won't survive. Then you can vaccumm the toys or wash them. Also you should bomb your house. Get a flea bomb or one that is made for small bugs and set them off in the rooms that have been exposed to the head lice. I hope this information helps and good luck!

Tips 2:
Take a cup of Coconut oil and add 1 tspn of crushed Camphor to this. Heat the oil till camphor melts. Apply well on scalp while the oil is still warm. Leave for 1 hour before washing.
Tips 3:

do they actually have it?? If they have it get that stuff called rid it's seposed to be the best treatment, just follow the instructions on the bottle. Don't allow them to go into public places untill the problem has cleared up!!!! If they don't actually have it(as far as you can tell) check them regularly for a few days, the place they'll most likely lay their eggs is around the nap of the neck & by the ears

Get lice shampoo and hope that they aren't the super-lice they've been talking about on the news. If they are the super lice you're going to have to shave their heads. Maybe a picture of Natalie Portman in 'V for Vendetta' will cheer them up and see they can still look pretty (if the situation were to get that dire, they're most likely just normal lice).

Get some lice remover treatment stuff, then wash EVERYTHING that they have been on. Ex. bed sheets, combs, hair bands, ect. If there is something you can't wash put it in a sealed bag for a day...(I think.) Make sure that after you treat their hair there are no left over louse, or their eggs (nits).

Check their heads REALLY WELL, if you see any lice bugs or eggs.. go to your nearest drug store and buy RID (or any other lice product).. thats what my parents used on me when I was younger (there was a break out of it at my school when I was little.. not fun!!).. It will have instructions with it and the littles combs that you use to get the bugs and eggs out!! It will get rid of it!! Every lil' one gets at least one good case of the lice at one time or another!! Good luck!!

first off, relax.
it happens A LOT.
(previously camp counselor)
the advice about washing hair...not helpful...the advice about lice treatment...very helpful
washing their hair like normal will not get rid of lice. it can make matters worse.
they like clean hair. no kidding.
treat their hair with a lice treatment...
but then make sure you wash all bedding. boil hairbrushes (or soak in a bleach/water solution), vaccum well. they will jump and you can find that they will come back after a treatment if they have had a chance to find a home in a pillow or brush...
