My Grandmother lives in Hazel Green Alabama (near Huntsville) and she has serious panic (anxiety) attacks pretty frequently, she takes Xanax for it and it does help calm her down but she would like to find a way to not take the drug so much and maybe find a way to keep the attacks from getting so bad. She is on Medicare and the don't pay for a therapist or a Psychologist and when she calls around about self pay she was quoted basically around $250 which she just cannot afford. So I am looking for any ideas that someone might have as to where she can maybe get help without it costing a fortune.I did find her some self-help books but she is an old lady and verfy german so there are alot of things she has a hard time understanding, especially technical terms so i don't know how much help the books will be. Appreciate any help on this.
Thank you
Missy

Contact the local Mental Health Clinic in the area. They can assist you with this matter.

Someone had to have prescribed the Xanax for her, a medical Dr? Maybe you could go with her to her next appt and talk to her Dr with her? What makes her anxious? Maybe she should be evaluated for depression and be taking a medication routinely to keep her on an even keel. Xanax is not a good medication for the elderly as it has a tendency to build up in the body over time. Maybe you could find a social worker in the area that could help you. The best place to start is the Dr. If he can't help refer you to one, contact the Dept of Human Services. They should be able to help you refer her to someone in social services in your area. Many times they can help with financial assistance or knows someone that can help. The services are free. Please take advantage of these services for her. She is lucky to have you.
