I think a few of you are misunderstanding the question. I didn't ask if there should be other things then god. I was telling you that I had nothing to lose by going to church not that church was the only thing in my life. What the hell made you think that?

Teleological

"If you spend your life going to church and honoring a god that doesn't exist, then you fail to make your life have meaning."

If we create meaning, then it does not matter if God exists.

**********

You are assuming "works" is the key to heaven.

Many of you seem to associate your poor religious experiences with peoples' behavior. This does not make sense and implies that other people have more influence with G(g)od than you do. Moreover, this makes G(g)od subject to human fancies.

Now, I am a Bible believing Christian. I would urge non-Christians to forget what negative things other people have done in the name of God, and seek and consider a relationship with God through active reading of the Bible and by opening your heart and mind...not what somebody did or didn't do.

**********************

Dude, what in the world are you talking about, this makes no
sense what-so-ever...

"atheists can not give answer for their purpose of their life . they fool themselves by denying there is no god. this is my question to them. can they give reasons why evil, sufferings exist in the world?"

Keep this is mind, being an atheist simply means that you believe there is no such thing as a supreme being. Therefore, all life is subject to the same rules of nature. Here is the funny part of your question, both Christians and atheists will give the same reasons, although the etiology of evil may be different (e.g., original sin vs. selfishness; but are not they the same?).

******************

Rational choice, you would go to church to protect your soul against the potential error in your absence of belief; time wasted at church becomes more important than personal time. However, at this point one might be better described as an agnostic beacuse you would believe that you have a soul that needs protection.

churches have good intentions but the people are becoming worse and worse. If you can gain knowledge from the general message in church and not the opinionated parts of the sermon, you can learn. I live in texas, were southern baptists rule society. I can't stand people here. I can't go to church because I have tattoos and piercings. Churches have become cults to me of non working bush loving soccer moms were stand around and thrive on gossip and judge everyone by appearance. I think there is a God. But I think he has become misunderstood through the centuries. Don't think of it as losing an hour. Think of it as time spent questing for the truth.

Oops! Except, you missed something quite critical.

See, your god may or may not exist. But *your* god isn't the only choice. There are many different gods of many different beliefs. Choose the wrong one, and you end up in eternal suffering or with nothing anyway.

Statistically speaking, you're almost certain to end up making the wrong choice, and ending up getting shafted in the afterlife. You have slightly better odds going with religion than with atheism, but we atheists don't care much for that; we'd rather be honest with ourselves and make something of our lives the way we want to, rather than wasting time and mental energy out of a fear of an admittedly irrational and unlikely consequence.

There's no shame in your religion, really. You believe what you believe. Don't cheapen your beliefs by trying to justify them objectively.

After all, despite the fact that you're almost statistically certain to fail in your spiritual endeavors, does that mean you're going to stop going to church and give up your faith? I'm willing to bet that you won't, because the reason you give in your question isn't the reason you go to church. It's a matter of faith, not a matter of reason.

Yup
Sounds about right.
You have nothing to lose.
But, I, instead of wasting an hour every sunday, will just live my life by morals and not believe in heaven, hell, or god :)

If I go to Church I loose a precious time. I prefer to spend that time with my kids, a romantic dinner with my wife, at the beach, at the theater, playing tennis, sailing or drinking a beer in my terrace. This are definitely better options than going to a bored church. Anyway if I'm an atheist what is the reason to go to the church?

Your argument is the famous argument of Blaise Pascal. It contains a logical error.

The error lies in the belief that life can have no meaning if there is no God. However, life can have meaning -- we create it. If you spend your life going to church and honoring a god that doesn't exist, then you fail to make your life have meaning. You lose (not loose) all the meaning that you could have created.

On first impulse I was going to say time. But if you are a christian and go to church you better go because you believe in your God and not just in case! If your god exist wouldn't he know your just faking it? That is just fake! At least I'm honest and stick to my guns. I can respect that more than playing a role hoping an almighty god can't see through it.

I think 'god' has better things to do then hate everyone who has sinned or not gone to church, otherwise 'god' hates everyone. I live my life the way I want, not the way some jackass says to in some bible that millions of dumbasses says are the owrd of 'god'. Face it no one will ever proove he exists. 'God' doesn't even bother to come down from 'heaven' to show himself, screw that. I think I will keep believing in something more plausable, like the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

not an aethiest, but i just wanted to point out you should have capitalized God.
also, there is more to it than just going to church an hour every sunday...also, just because God exists doesn't mean you automatically go to heaven. you need to believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross for our sins. it would also be a good idea to get baptized...
