I have HORRIBLE knee problems and everyone tells us all to lift with our knees and not our backs. Well what if we can't lift with our knees because they are bad? The only way to lift after that is to use your back right?

I've already seen an orthopedist and a physical therapist for my knees. Basically physical therapy just made them worse so they told me not to use my knees. Said no lifting with the knees, no running and no jumping. I can barely handle stairs and no exercises help. Now I'm pregnant and so walking is difficult because of all the extra weight I have to carry. I've been told that by the time I'm 50 I'll have had both knees replaced and there is nothing they can do to help me right now.

Young lady, you say you have issues with your knees, that is already sad but you don't even want to think in terms of back and spine injury!

Cannot pick it up - leave it there or get help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's correct. If you can't bend your knees and use your leg muscles to lift something from the floor, your only choice is to bend from the waist and use your back muscles. If you must lift something heavy, you risk herniating a disc. Most people with knee problems can benefit by strengthening their leg muscles since it stabilizes the knee. You need to see a doctor and physical therapist.

I was always told to lift with my THIGHS! It is also essential when u lift that u tuck ur bum in and pull in ur stomach muscles,so it is not just ur knees that has to work. If u have to lift at work, ask for a physiotherpist assessment of ur ability to do the work, he/ she may be able to help u with technique.
i used to have shocking knees. I lost weight, cut down on salt, started taking fish oil and started low level lower body strengthening at the gym. i can now squat over a toilet seat to pee (very handy when ur travelling a lot) (LOL) .

What exactly are you lifting? If it's something you do for a living, then use a dolly (two-wheeler). If not, then I guess you just got to use your back when the situation arises.
