I was raised Baptist and one of the things I did not like nor understand was why the minister felt the need to yell at the congregation. This is called "preaching" as opposed to teaching. Personally if someone is yelling at me I either want to leave or tune him out. Why do they yell and why things like "You are going to hell!"?

This is only one of the reasons I left the Protestant faith and became Catholic.

I was not asking for comments or opinions on my faith only on why you thought they did this.

Actually as a child they frightened me. I have never been able to abide yelling.

I've often wondered that myself... They would be more credible if they used a reasonably tone with their congregation. Any preacher that yells, "You are going to Hell" is a judgemental windbag! Jesus taught with meekness and love and preachers ought to use His example.

There are many different denominations of the Protestant faith. Baptists I think are the "liveliest" and probably make the most noise. Personally, I think that's a good thing in some ways, but not the scare the heck out of you preacher style. You might have tried either the Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopalian denominations. I was raised Methodist and never had a minister who yelled or threatened.

LOL... my gf asked me the same question. I can't speak for other ministers, but I've never yelled "You are going to hell". I have from time to time been known to ... um... speak in a louder tone as I get more emboldned while delivering my message. Unlike some of my "brothers in the ministry", I don't think I've ever reached the point where I seem to hack and cough while preaching (in some churches, it's called "whooping" and is said to indicate that the preacher is really feeling the spirit). To my way of thinking if the people cannot understand what I am saying, then they are probably not going to get anything out of the message. Still, it is not uncommon for a minister to get caught up in the passion of his message...
Then too... some are just plain loud (like my little brother).
Incidentally, preaching - whether yelled or not - is simply telling the good news that Christ rose again to save us. Romans Chapter 10 tell us "Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be save. But how can they call on someone they don't believe in... and how can they believe in someone they've never heard of... and how can they hear without someone preaching to them... and how can they preach unless they've been sent... as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those that bring you good news.
Oh... and to the young lady who alluded that preachers are in it for the money... while that may be true of some, it is not true of all... or even most... we are servants. Once in a while a church I speak at may offer me a small financial token, but it's not enough to live on (sometimes it's not even a tank of gas). Ministers who are in it for the money are gonna have a lot of explaining to do when they get upstairs... I'm glad I won't be in THAT line.

Because they are salesmen. They feel they need to yell in order to get your money. I have a friend who has debated with many protestant ministers and one even said flat out, "I know you're right, that the Catholic Church is the only true religion, but I can't quit my position as a minister because I don't want to give up the money!" Sick...

Varying the tone and cadence of speech keeps attention. There are also other verbal contrivances to make it appear that one is sincere, humble, or emotionally engaged. Much of it is deceptive manipulation to make money. Religion is probably the biggest business in the United States.

They need the idle minded to be emotionally vested so that they cease thinking and act according to the training supplied. A thinking congregation is the bane of all religions.

Some weak believers need to feel the drama; the passion of Christ isn't quite enough for the dim. Those that are yellers and of the fire and brimstone school of thought are trying to appease those that don't fully understand God's gift of Grace and Love. We need to remember the key exhortations of Christ: Love God first and foremost, and love everyone else (your neighbor) as you love yourself. No need for the threat of hell. No need to yell. Peace be with you.

Some of the people in church are deaf.
The pastor doesn't want you to go to sleep.
The pastor is excited.
There is something for changes in vocal intonation and volume to make points. It is easier for the people to follow and to listen.
I attended a JW district assembly. A person who spoke in "academic tones" (same pace, tone, intonation, volume) put 75% of his audience to sleep.

the same reason people yell at football games. Excitement.
The presence of the Lord, when you feel Him, or His anointing, it is exciting. The joy of the Lord, is our strength.
