I have called two vets in my area and neither one of them will neuter my 5 month old kitten. I have the number to two more to call tomorrow but I have a feeling they will just tell me the same story. If I brought him to the humane society not to give him away but to have him neutered do they do that?

Well I called a place today that's an animal hospital that I happened to drive by the other day and write there number down. They said they do it at 4 months so I have an appointment for him friday. I agree with the poster that said the earlier the better that is what I have been reading too and that they were wrong about doing it before 6 months harming the animal. Some vets are in disagreement about this but they are proving that the earlier the better.
Also in answer as to why I am in such a rush he's getting more and more hyper every day and keeps jumping on my female cat and biting her and I heard neutering can calm them down. It's gotten so bad that my female 8 year old cat is hoarse and losing her voice from hissing and meowing at him so much. I had to separate them because he just won't calm down sometimes. Other times he's as sweet as can be. I'm thinking his hormones are starting to kick in and neutering would really help. It did the last male cat I had.

I'm a Vet Tech and I volunteer at the SPCA.
The first couple of answers are completely wrong.
YES the SPCA and animal control WILL neuter him. Some places will even do it for free, or at a discount, if you are low income or you happen to find a "Spay Day".
Having pets fixed early, (currently as small as 1 pound) is what is now recommended. The sooner the better. As soon as you can feel his little testicles in the sack he can be neutered.
There can be risks associated with anesthesia in small animals, but at 5 months he is near to full grown as to make no difference. You should ask why they don't neuter 5 month olds, sounds strange to me.
Call the humane societies in your area, they will be happy to help.

Even though some big humane societies wil neuter owned animals, I know that many (atleast those in PA) will not do it. However, they can probably give you the name of a cheap person to nueter them.
I went through the same thing with my cat. No one would neuter her until she was 6 months old, but when I took her in they said she as pregnant and I wither had to wait or have a cat abortion done. So now I have to wait till my cat has kittens.....blah....
anyway, why not just tell your vet that the cat is 6 months old?

There are more anesthetic risks when kittens and dogs are younger than 5-6 months of age...it's called pediatric spay and neuter - and it can be done REALLY early - like 7-8 weeks, but most vets won't...
Depends on the humane society...call to see what services they offer - some have in-house spay/neuter - good for you for wanting to get him neutered:)

Depends what area you are in. The vet I work w/ spays/neuters them when they are 2 pounds! Some say that is too early, but there is no solid research that proves that it is wrong to do. Keep looking around. Some shelters do that for a small fee.

some adult males take a month or to have the capacity to stop any spraying complications after being neutered. Did he spray before you had him neutered? if so, he remains wondering like a tom. I recommend you confine him for some weeks to a washer-friendly room and really be certain each of the spots he's sprayed interior the abode is sparkling so he would not keep marking.

My vet was willing to spay my kitten at 3 months. My other vet said not until 6 months. Humane Society generally does not do vet work for owned animals. Keep calling around, but I think your best bet is to wait. They wouldn't all say 6 months without good reason.

There is a reason why those vets want you to wait another month; my own vet doesn't like to neuter a kitten younger than six months, as the surgery is more difficult. Unless you have a compelling reason, please just wait and have him neutered in a month.
More difficult surgery means your cat is more likely to suffer complications. I cannot think of any reason a 5 month old male cat would need to be neutered; they don't start spraying that young. It is much harder on the kitten. Please, reconsider.

Yes, I would be amazed if a shelter said no -- the goal is to prevent more litters, and most spaying and neutering is done very early these days. Make sure you don't let your kitten out, especially until it's done!
This article has links to spay/neuter sources and low-cost clinics: http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/fewhours/spay-neuter.htm
Good luck!
