but you don't need to stay in a hotel to see the parade close up...you can just get in line, preferably in front of a restaurant (think restroom).and stay with friends or somewhere else.

I live in NYC and when I was little every year I was jealous of the kids that got to watch from their apartment windows. Finally one year my grandfather asked one of his friends who lived along the parade route if we could watch from his apartment. Well within 30 minutes of watching from his fifth floor window I'll tell you I begged my grandfather to go downstairs so we could watch the parade outside and hear all the music and be around all the people. In my opinion the best place to watch from is right outside Central Park's Tavern on the Green at West 67th St. In years past there was always a hot dog stand for a light snack, plus the crowds there aren't as dense as other areas along the parade route, granted the last time I actually went to the parade was about 7 years ago but I doubt time has changed things that much. I'm not certain about the whole parade route but I do know that much of it runs up Central Park West which doesn't have many hotels its mostly residental. Most of the hotels that claim to be on CPW are actually on the streets running west of it whereas CPW is an avenue. I not certain but I think that the Essex House might be on the parade route.
