Roanoke village on the North Carolina coast, settled 1587, found to be deserted 1590. The word you describe is 'Croatoan' which named either a nearby landform or Native American tribe group. Mystery still unsolved.

Roanoke, North Carolina. And if you ask the Lumbee Indians from around here they claim to be the long lost decendents of that settlement. Who knows?

Well, I believe Rokanoe, NC there was a settlement that no one survived at. And also, the Vikings who came to America in Nova Scotia (i think) suffered the same fat.
