"lol' or "LOL" (You'll see it both ways.) means "laugh out loud". It's often used on Internet message boards, such as Yahoo. It can express sarcasm, disbelief or genuine humor when commenting on a given news story or discussion topic. It can also be used to ridicule another poster's comment. The practice was started by "trolls" (Follow the link below to learn more.), but is now widely used by many message board posters.
