Fat Bastard is a brand name invented originally for a Chardonnay wine made in France for the British market.
The name is a reference to the famous great wine Batard-Montrachet, a Chardonnay from Burgundy.
The name came from a comment by French winemaker Thierry Boudinaud and his English partner Guy Anderson decided it would be a great name for the wine.
The wine was a great success in Britain, and a second wine a Syrah named Utter Bastard was introduced.
When the wines started to be exported to the USA, via the Fat Bastard name was used for both wines and now there are several different wines in the range. Fat Bastard is the largest selling French Chardonnay in the USA
Some US states originally objected to the name, but I believe it is now accepted by them all.
Fat Bastard wines sold in the USA and UK are made in France. Fat Bastard wines sold in South Africa are made from local fruit.
Guy Anderson is responsible for several other wine names, including Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Le Freak. All these labels, and many more and the stories behind them are in the new book "Marilyn Merlot and the Naked Grape" - see http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594740992/sr=8-1/qid=1153213984/ref=sr_1_1/103-9874734-6961409?ie=UTF8

In order to produce high quality, fruit driven, food friendly wines, winemaker Thierry Boudinand sources grapes from several vineyards throughout the Languedoc region of Southern France. Thierry’s long standing relationship with the growers in the region has ensured consistently excellent quality for each Fat bastard varietal, vintage after vintage. By selectively choosing vineyards, Thierry is able to take advantage of the different terroir characteristics and blend a wine that is more harmonious and elegant than if he were restricted to a narrow district. Thierry confines his selections to vineyards within the districts of Gard, Hérault, and Aude.

Actually, it's French. (Rustiques, France I think).
The company is Thierry and Guy.
It's imported by a company called Click Wine Group in Seattle, WA.
I've had their Merlot and Shiraz, both were pretty good...but you can't beat the fat hippo and the name.
