My friend teaches tae kwon do and does all these funky high kicks... takes years of stretching !! They have certain methods to stretch that I watched. Example.. you stand up against the wall. Then you lift your leg. You need another person there to help. Then have someone push it up further as far as it'll go. Then exhale and have them push it to the pain level and hold a little while. Not sure in what intervals they do it, as they obviously rip the muscle. I wouldn't recommend that you do this without some guidance because you can cause a lot of damage if you do it wrong.

check out a book on stretching or start going to yoga. I was in tae kwon do during college and could do side and front splits. Skeletally (??sp??) we should be able to do that stuff but muscularly we can't...and it is the result of not stretching. One of the older (mid 60s) teachers at my school was REALLY flexible...and as fast as a snake. It was kinda scary. Anyway, he stretched every day to keep his flexibility.
