I want a 12 g shotgun for under $400. This gun will be for mostly hunting but I might want to mess around and shoot some bottles too. What gun do you guys recommend and what are some good animals to hunt with a shotgun? Also whats the hunting season right now? Plus whats up with slug shot shotguns, they seem really accurate, whats the bad news about them?

12 ga. is good for mid to large game, men, wolves, dogs, etc take 00 buck or slugs. turkey , and caniadian geese and other large birds take bird shot, 6, 8, 10. any smaller game you'd tear to peices, and wouldn't be enough left to dress out.for Small game you need a .410 ga. .For large game you want a rifle. Winchester is still popular. Savage is really good . Remington is also popular..WARNING; 12 ga. kicks like a mule and is getting too well known as a man hunters weapon because 00 buck scatters well and will still rip a man in half at 50 to 100 feet. So that is why i listed man, he is a very popular target of 12 ga shooters, and you will be looked at very closely..

Shotguns are mainly for birds. Depending on what is around you quail or pheasant are good hunting. I recommend a name gun like Browning or Remington. Go to a good pawn shop or watch the paper for a nice used one.

Slugs are used for hunting big game like deer in areas where visibility is poor and you don't want the bullet to travel far (hitting something you can't see. Like another hunter.)

Please don't shot bottles. Cans or clay pigeons are good. Broken glass is a major cause of forest fires. The glass acts like a magnifying glass starting fires. It also cuts any animal that steps on it.

Slug guns with rifled barrels are for hunting deer/bear/elk/ect., ones with smooth barrels are for hunting small game like squirrel, geese, turkey, duck, quail, rabbit, and other small game. You can shoot slugs out of a smooth barrel as well, however the max range is about 75 yards. A Remington 870 express is one of the most popular guns, and is only $240.

Are you from the City? Gitcha a good Winchester or Mossburg. Slugs are for hunting larger game. .12 gauge is good, hunt squirrel or rabbit until you get good, then hunt coon or turkeys.
