Look up publications by 'James Steele'. Jim Steele has taught at the USC School of Architecture for years and has the corner market on historic Architecture from around the world, but especially in Los Angeles. He's published a number of VERY interesting books that walk you through many of the significant structures of Los Angeles.

Just one thing: having worked for one of the firms that owns several of the sky-rises in downtown LA, you will most likely NOT be permitted to take photographs of the buildings' interiors. First, it was because of artistic/commercial rights (not wanting publishers to use the buildings' images for profit without paying royalties to the appropriate peoples). Now, it's for safety reasons as well (to make sure a terrorist isn't scoping out the place as a possible 'hit' site). That will most likely be the case with the modern skyrises...

However, you will be more likely able to take photos INSIDE at places like Green & Green's Gamble House in Pasadena; Wright's Hollyhock House in Hollywood; Schindler's House in Hollywood; Neutra's House in Silverlake......

Good luck with your tour. I hope you enjoy all of the architecture LA has to offer.
