Yes. We must remember that waiters/waitresses are making well below minimum wage. I recognize that there are some people in the food service industry who are simply terrible, but some customers can be downright terrible. I think we should cut them some slack. If you have trouble with a waitress one time, give her a second chance. Have trouble with her twice, write her off and go somewhere else or complain to manager. In the end, waiters and waitresses should be tipped because this is the larger part of their actual income.

Yes, when I was waitressing in Disney World in Florida 4 years ago we only made 2.50 an hour. That is about the norm. for most states. The work can be hard. Tip according to service. 20% for good service and more if it is excellent, 15% for mediocre service and if the service was so bad that it interfered with the enjoyment of the meal leave a nickle as an insult tip. Remember it is not the servers fault if the food does not taste good or is slow coming out. She/he is not the cook. By the way they are called servers now.

Oh I love people who talk and have no idea what they are saying. First off waitresses do not work for less than minimum wage. If they did all they would have to do is report their employer to the authorities. The next thing on the agenda is there is no set amount to tip. You do not have to tip it is not a law. I tip when my service is above average. I tip according to how much above average it is. I must tell you in the last few years , I have left very few tips. I can only guess that restaurants are hiring idiots and lazy people.Years ago you got good service almost every place one would go and eat. Nowadays it seems that waitress expect you to tip so they act like they can not be bothered with you.

ALWAYS!!! waiters/waitresses in the US get paid under $3 an hour (which doesn't even cover all the taxes). They are at work to make that money, rather than at a desk or office building. In your dining experience, there is something (and probably a LOT of somethings) that that person supplied you with, that deserves that 15-20%. 15% is mediocre service, while 20% is standard good service. anything over 20% is considered excellent service, and should be warranted if the service is such. we are just people trying to make $$, and believe you me, there are a lot of 'not nice people' who come out to eat, get good service, and don't leave the proper amount... and that just makes the server that much more frustrated. thanks for listening!

Hell yes. Unless you want booger dressing on your salad next time you go there. I heard that waitresses/waiters get a lower minimum wage than most other jobs because they're expected to get tips to bring their earnings up. Also when you tip the waitress at most places the money is devided up at the end so the cooks and everyone gets a share. I think that's pretty cool.

Waiters and waitresses get paid poorly. For example, a certain well-known restaurant in the Charleston, WV area pays their waiters and waitresses only $2.11 an hour, compared with the $5.15 an hour minimum wage in place in WV.
So, the above mentioned workers depend on their tips for a living.

Yes. In most place, waiters and waitresses make about $2.50 per hour. This is because they assume that minimum wage will be met by tips - that they will make at least an addition $4 per hour.
So, if you don't tip, you could make your waitress end up with $2.50 for the whole time she served you. That just isn't fair.
If you can't afford to tip, you really can't afford to eat out. 15% is just part of the experience of dining out.

Yes, must waiters and waitresses only make 2.13 an hour and rely on tips to make a living. the better service, the better you can tip them, but I always start at about 15 percent and go up from there.

Yes, every time. That means even if it's crappy service... Before anyone goes off the deep end about that, keep in mind YOU control how much the server gets! If excellent service, 20-25%. Good service, 15%. Average, 10%. Really bad, leave a QUARTER on the table. Never EVER stiff them. If you leave nothing, they will figure you're just being a jerk. If you leave a dinky amount, that lets them know you were going to pay more but they screwed up.

Absolutely. Restaurants are actually allowed to pay waiters LESS than minimum wage b/c their tips will make up for it. If this is the case with your waiter, then not tipping is like making them pay for your meal. I tend to tip 20%, unless it's a buffet-type place where they only bring you drinks. Then I'll do like 10%. I will only not tip if the waiter completely offended me somehow, but I can't remember ever doing that.
