what a terrible thing to say about a dog by "Questions&Ans". Rottweilers are working dogs and were never bred or ment to be family dogs. Even today, true breeders don't care too much about the breed being a family dog but instead being a great working dog. The problem is, people don't understand the difference between a working dog breed, a toy breed, and a family dog. A family dog is one of those dogs that people let live inside their house and lay on the furniture or eat first or let strangers or friends in the house easily. (jumping doesn't count). Toy breeds are all these little spoiled s$*%heads that women carry around in their hands and in their bags. Working breeds were ment for just that, working. Working is protection work, guarding, schutzhund, and police work. The Rottweiler was bred to be a Guard dog and a Protection dog. Its in their nature and the attack instinct is innate to them. Ever see a Rott catch something? That head shake they do is from the breeding which is used to kill prey or drop or disable a perpetrator. These dogs make great "one family/one owner" dogs because they are fully and totally loyal and will fight to the death to protect their owner or handler. A child CANNOT handle a rottweiler. It requires a person that can claim and enforce their position as the Alpha male/female over the Rott. So, in response to your question, No. A ban should not be placed on them. However, it should be mandatory to test owners/handlers on their knowledge of the breed and ability to handle the breed before purchase of the animal. Dogs know a leader when they see him/her. They can sense it or smell it. Its the owners/handlers fault not the dogs that the animal cannot be controlled.

Well, I love Rottweilers. They are my favorite breed. Mine are gentle, loving and very well behaved and they live in a pack with small dogs with no problems.

The big problem here is people, they don't know how to raise or train dogs. Rottweilers aren't for everyone as they are a dominate breed as are Pit Bulls, Akitas, Bull Mastiffs, etc. There are lots of large dominate dog breeds.

Unfortunately, due to the media, these magnificent animals are being turned into psycho dogs by misguided folks. Many are never socialized or trained. Others are beaten and abused to make them meaner. These owners want vicious dogs and someone gets hurt. It just breaks my heart everytime I see one on a chain and hear some idiot bragging about how "bad" his dog is. Many of the folks that are doing this to Rottweilers and other dogs are criminals and want mean dogs for a reason.

So, should we ban Rottweilers, no. Should we ban stupid people, oh yes! But I just haven't figured out how to do this yet.

That's ridiculous..it's all about the proper raising of a dog..any dog will bite. I just spent 3 days as an out patient at the hospital getting iv antibiotics from a 7lb dog. Problem is people have stereotyped..next thing you know people will have an issue with Chihuahuas because they are skittish and bark waaaaaaaay too much..When people take responsibility rather than trying to shuffle the blame and putting a ban on certain breed of dogs. First it was the pit pull, then the staffordshire terrier, now the rotties..When will people take accountability??????

The question should be asked, should we stop selling these types of breeds to bad owners. There is not one breed of dog that is "BAD" and should be banned. Training/obedience and knowledge of the breed is what is needed by owners. I have 2 Rotties and a Mastiff. I did not get either breed until I did tons of research. People should ask themselves is this the type of dog I want. EXAMPLE: my male Rottie I rescued 4 years ago. When I got him I wanted to do something with him, but what. Pet Therapy. We are a certified Pet Therapy team that goes to hospitals and nursing homes. Also, it took me about a good 8 months of constant training with him to get him to even be able to attend the therapy class we had to go thorough. I had a lady at a local pet shop say to me, "Oh, I want a dog like that". I looked her straight in the eye, and told her, "Miss, these dogs don't come this way; it's takes hours and hours of training. She didn't have anything to say to me afterwards. I've even had people want to buy him from me. This is the kind of Rottweiller we should be seeing. Training is the key to any breed. A Chi can be just as vicious. So, again my answer is don't ban the breed, ban the people that want one but don't want to take the responsiblity of owning one. Thank you.

Absolutely NOT! There are a million great Rotties for every one that bites someone. Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog and it bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it - make it a major felony!

Physically, any large dog and some small ones are capable of killing a child. Even a Golden retriever accidentally killed a child this past winter - the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the child died of strangulation.

NO! There should be at the most mandatory training. People are to blame for misbehaved dogs, no matter what the breed! Rotties are the greatest- I've had four, NEVER a problem to anyone because we trained them right.
It's like asking "Should there be a ban on kids" because they can be bullies sometimes-- that's the parent's responsibility and getting rid of kids (or dogs) wont fix anything!

No. Dogs are like people there are bad ones, there are good ones no matter their breed. Just like we have good people who help others, and people who do great harm to others.

However, there are particular breeds that people pick and train or abuse to get a certain behavior from the dog, and those people should be banned from owning dogs. However knowing who those people are, is a difficult undertaking.

Should we ban certain breeds? No. Because those people will just pick a new breed to train to attack. There are breeders who pick the best fighters and breed them to make "more agressive dogs" so they will just move from Pitts and Rotts, to Boxers and Mastiffs, from there to Labs and Pointers...

Will we ban them all?

No. I don't agree with the logic behind banning certain breeds of dogs. Any poorly trained dog can be aggressive. When leash laws are enforced and dog owners are truly held responsible for their pets' actions, there will be fewer dog attacks.

Absolutely not! Rotties are awesome dogs, I've only met one that was aggressive and it was the owner who was at fault by not training them. They're very docile, sweet, loving, and good protectors of the family. They're also very smart.

Unfortunately, the wrong people have been getting a hold of them and ruining their good disposition and training them to be aggressive.

The dog shouldn't be blamed for having bad owners.

PS: I agree with momma dog all the way!!

NEVER ! Rotties are wonderful pets if you train and treat them right. I have a male, and Bear is the best behaved dog that I have ever had ( much better than the small dogs I've had in the past.) . They are loving, loyal, beautiful dogs, and I will never have any other breed again. (* I agree, that first poster was a HATER !!!)
