so this guy likes me, and before me, he liked one of my friends forever. i want him to get the message that i DONT like him, but i dont want to hurt his feelings, especially since my friend rejected him so many times. i know how stupid this sounds.

First of all, neither your question nor your situation, sounds stupid. This type of situation will probably occur more than once in your life.
As a guy, if I was interested in a woman, The kindest thing she could do would be to nicely but clearly tell me that she is not interested in me. If your friend had to reject him many times it means that he isn't going to either pick up on or accept any
indirect communication. It sounds as if this guy may have even been obnoxious in pursuing your friend. If this is the case and telling him nicely that you're not interested doesn't stop his behavior toward you that you don't like; you may have to forcefully
tell him that you don't like him and to leave you alone. I hope that is not necessary.

If he liked your friend before he liked you, then you should tell him you don't take seconds. Then tell him in a nice tone that it would not work out because you’re not looking for anything at this moment, because your more focused with school or career. If he still persists, then tell him bluntly that you’re not interested.

Just be straight with him - it will be better for him in the long run if you reject him now rather than stringing him along.

tell him you like someone else but if you didn't like anybody you would probably think about it. that way he doesn't feel so bad since your friend already rejected him.

What is the reason you don't like him? Is it that you don't like who he is, or just aren't attracted to him?
