What is a good heart healthy diet after quadruple bypass surgery? Should you cut out all sugars? Or all salts? He is not near the hospital where it was done and you know how hard it can be to get appointments and how expensive. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Chay

Cut dwon sugars as much as you can, cut down salts as well. Use olive oil rather than margarine or butter when possible. Steer clear of trans fats. The best fats are called omega-3 acids, they are found in salmon and tuna...hope this bit helps...

17 years ago I had emergency bypass surgery. I'm only alive today because I watch my diet and exercise.

You need to talk to someone familiar with the case, but in general terms;

Watching salt, sugar, fat & caffine are the way to go. It may not mean close to zero on any of these. For the first 15 years I only watched my fat. I did not understand the dangers of sugar.

I no longer drink any sugared drinks. I eat anything with sugar now in moderation. If I have too much sodium, my lungs get congested, I get very weak and sometimes I can't speak full sentances (it's been a year since it was that bad), but sodium has the most immediate bad effect on me.

There is no doubt that my watching my fat has extended my life.

Stay away from fast food. The sodium and fat are ridiculous.

READ READ READ. Don't read "fad diets". Try to get some basic, well respected (in the medical world) authors. Contact the American Heart Association.

I was given less than a year to live 17 years ago. I was on disability for 3 years (never expecting to go back to work).After 3 years I was able to go back to work for 12 wonderful years.

You too can beat the odds. Work at it!

The vegetables make this dish very healthy, shrimp and crab are fine if not consumed a lot.
