Well I don't let my cats go outside, and I wouldn't exactly want them just relieving themselves where ever they want! But if your cat is allowed to go outside, I wouldn't bother with a box. The litter itself also helps them satisfy their instinct to bury it and cover up the smell.

Cats need a place for their wast just like you or I do. If your cat is an outdoor cat, then they have the intire outdoors to do all the excreting they want. If your cats are indoor cats, however (which is safer for you cats and helps them live longer), then sooner or later they're going to need a place to get rid of their bodily wastes. If they don't have a litter box, they they're going to find a secluded spot in you house, and do their business there. Usually this spot isn't obvious, so it'll take a while to find. Then you have to clean it up. Now cat pee smells like the ammonia you use to do some of the tougher cleaning jobs (and which you should never mix with bleach by the way), and cat poop smells like, well, poop. If your cats go in a litter box lined with a garbage bag (or something similar), then clean up is as simple as throwing out the old litter and replacing it with fresh litter.
So essentially you have two choices if your cats are strictly indoor cats. You can let them go wherever they will, or you can get them a litter box. Personally, I find it easier (and less smelly) to have a litter box.

the same reason people have toilets to go to the bathroom..If you had an outside cat they wouldn't need a litter box...But cats can be trained to use the litter box when they are brought into your house. The same way you train a dog to go on the newspaper when doggie is inside.

So they won't go all over the house? Unless it's an outside cat all the time...they can go anywhere pretty much. If you've found it useless before and you own a cat....get a litter box

Most indoor cats need somewhere to go to the bathroom. If they are outdoor cats they still would rather use a litter box because its easier for them to scoop it around their poo.

Well if your going to have a cat inside, they need a potty. Scratching is a natural behavior for cats and this is one way of keeping your home clean. I've seen people train their cats to use the toilet, but it takes a lot of time and patients to do this.

Beause with out the boxes, they'll use your bed, carpet or yard. You don't want that. There is a way to rain cats to use the toilet, but it's not easy.

as u know cats are known to run away if let outside so it not only keeps the cat from going to the bathroom all over your house, but ensures that you won't think about letting them outside and having them accidentally run away

It would be like not flushing your toilet...it would become VERY unpleasant in a couple of days. Also it helps preventing Urinary infections and blockages.

supposedly you can teach cats to go pee/poo in the toilet. i tried. didnt work. they just held it for a while until they couldnt stand it anymore.
i think that they like to dig and bury their stuff. if they were in the wild, their predators/prey would not know their tracks.
???
thats just what my mom told me back in the day. who knows if its true, but it makes sense. :)
