Sometimes pranksters play tricks on the poor deer and turn the sign 90 degrees. Then the deer run parallel to the road and are never able to cross.

Yes, rim_333, I am serious.

Well its a very hard process. First the deer have to apply for a permit for the DOT to come and see the normal crossings of deer in that area. Usually the deer have to show proof that a deer has been killed at the place of the sign should be posted. A police report usually will do the trick. Then after DOT personal see how many times the deer cross given a time allowed process per how many lanes of traffic. Then a daily traffic count is preformed. If it meets requirements then a license is permitted and the DOT will set the sign per deers approval (due to ribbon cutting party) then a week long gathering is to happen.

Here in the south, we look for a spot where a deer has been struck and killed. Then we put up a couple of wooden crosses at the site and some plastic flowers. Then when the other deer get used to using that spot to pay their respects to their deerly departed loved one, we have the department of transportation put up the Deer Crossing signs, but not before Bubba Sue puts a few rounds though the sign with his trusty, rusty 44!

You cant see them from the road, but there are other signs on the side of the road facing outward, telling deer its okay to cross there because cars will slow down for them.

The deer can't read the sign but he (or she) does know what a deer on the sign looks like.

It wasn't easy but it was well worth the trouble. I think it was the "yellow" that did the trick!
