I know cat lovers don't perfer friskers, meow mix, whiskas. But why? I know they contain "fillers" but what does this to the cat? Does it make them get plumpy and overweight? I currently feed my cats a mixture of deli cat and purina cat chow because thats what she likes. My cat is very slim, she is also very healthy. She doesn't like the Iams and I don't want her starvin to death. Thanks for the info.

She get spelanty of food. When ever my daughters see the bowls empty they hurry to fill them. So they are full 24/7. I know she loves can foods I jsut wish there was a way around the poopies.

My cat only eats Friskies, Meow Mix, Whiskas, Purina, all the most popular brands that are so unpopular with some catlovers. She doesn't like other brands. I tried Nature's Variety and Iams, but she just doesn't like them.
She also eats canned tuna in water and Fancy Feast (a little).
However, she is 7 and very healthy. She just got her annual shots, and the vet said her weight is ok -- not underweight, not overweight.
I guess you can give those brands to your cat, if she doesn't eat Iams.
Hope this helps.

if shes too skiny, there are some high calorie pastes that you can get from the vet. also there are lots of high cal foods available. i know hill's science diet has lots of perscription diets, but they are also quite expensive.
maybe you need to give her more food.
with respect to your question about why people don't like those other foods, i think part of the reason is because of the fillers, but also because you need to watch the levels of "ash" that are in the food. check the back of the bag. it will say. the ash is bad for the kidneys.
i have had 3 cats that have lived to be very old before they died. they lived off meow mix, deli cat, and tender vittles. my mom would feed them the dry food in the morning and wet food at night. they lived long, fairly healthy lives. i feed my two cats now science diet. they are only 3, so we'll see how long they last. i hope that with the better/more expensive food that they will live longer, healthier lives. i'll let you know in 16 yrs or so. :)

Fillers just mean they have to eat more to feel full, make more poop, and are not as healthy as if they ate a more balanced food. Check out Nature's Variety (Prairie makes)...it is more expensive - but you feed less to make them feel just as full - plus it is healthier.
Switch her over to a new food gradually to reduce diarrhea - but there are usually some lose stools while changing foods. A better quality food (even Science Diet will be better than Friskies...)
Some pet foods are the equivalent of what McDonald's is to people...these filler foods just don't have the nutritional content - all the vitamins and minerals have been cooked away - even in some of the "better quality" foods. I like Nature's Variety because they biocoat it with vitamins and minerals after they make the kibble - that way it is not lost...

Fillers aren't good because its empty calories. There is no nutrition in filler. Also, these brand contain animal by-products, essentially all meat that isn't fit for human consumption. Your cat may be healthy now, but after a long period of eating these type of foods, pets develop health problems. Just like you would if you ate only McDonald's all the time. If you want her to gain a bit of weight and nutrition, switch to a better quality food. Also, you can give your cat canned tuna (low sodium kind) once a week. She will love you for it.

friskers, meow mix, whiskas have given several of my cat's the runs, Vet said it was due to all the color dyes. I remember their poop being the same orange color as the food. Just a thought

Mainly because some of that stuff isn't "complete and balanced" meaning that your cat will not get all vitamins/minerals, protein, etc. needed to stay healthy. There is a deficiency somewhere and supplementation could be needed. One of the most important things cats need is taurine. Dogs don't require it, but cats do.

For some odd reason the moist cat food is better if you want your cat to gain weight. That's all I fed my underweight kitten for a month or so, and now she's as fat as a cow!

It's the ash content. The less of it, the better.
