When I was about 5 or so, took a pack of gum. 30 yrs later I still remember the whole thing. Didn't quite have the whole concept of $ and all that just yet. Thought that when we walked through the checkout lane the stuff was ours. My Mom flipped when she saw me start to open it in the parking lot & marched me back inside lecturing the whole way... Gave me the $ for it, gosh what was it like 25 cents and not one of those tiny packs either... anyway she made me pay for it and apologize for stealing. I remember I was crying and sobbing about it, and the clerk felt sorry for me said it was ok for me to keep it now that I'd paid for it, but my Mom said no way and wouldn't let me take it no matter what. Tell you what. I NEVER took anything without paying for it again. If it's a little bitty kiddo though I don't know that I'd go through all that with them, technically I WAS old enough to know better, just take it back & say, "Sorry, didn't notice it was in his/her hands." If it was eaten or non returnable condition then just go in & pay for it. If nothing else it will ease your own concience and start the lesson that items must be paid for AND cleared by Mom before they leave the store.

Yes, my daughter did it a couple of times when she was under 2. We would take the items back (usually candy) and she would look all sad a guilty. Then, without fail, the clerk would tell her it was okay and she was such a pretty girl. Completely distracting from the fact she stole. They always made her feel good so she never felt bad about stealing. So I after a couple of those trips I just told her it was bad and took it back myself so she would understand it was wrong. I never had a problem with her stealing after that last conversation.

Oh yes, my son took a book from the pet store about ferrets...we don't even have a ferret, the aisles were close and he wanted to look at it. He is 23 months. I just called the store, they laughed and I brought it back the next day...call the store, they will understand.

Yes. My son was almost 2. He took some lipstick off the shelf and I didn't even notice it until we got home. It was in his stroller behind him, wedged in and I didn't see it until I got the stroller out of the car. I wanted to go back to the store and give it back to them, but my Sister told me that was dumb and I would look stupid. I should have taken it back though, who cares what anyone thinks. It is the right thing to do.

Yes. When my son was about 2 , he took something from an aquarium. We didn't notice until we got back to the hotel. We returned it the next day and the manager did get angry and turned to holler at our son, but then he saw his age and stopped and thanked us for returning the item.

Hello-
Yep, my son took a teeny party favor from a store. (.10) item. We live far away from it, so I made him address the envelope and put the items back in to return to the store.

Hasn't done it again!

Great training lesson!!!!! Take her back to the store, go to customer service, have her give the toy back, and tell the manager she was sorry, and she will try not to do it again. THey will understand, and respect you for doing that with your child.
