I have a 2yr. old chihuahua, and she is my life. I would not recommend getting one if you have small children, as it could get hurt. But she is an extremely loving dog. They are loyal, and tend to pick a few people to get really close to. They are supposed to be hard to potty train, but i got lucky mine was trained in less than a week. She is also extremely smart, and knows many tricks, much more than many larger dogs i know. They are high maintenance, they can't be let out alone to potty, they have a soft spot on their heads all their life (much like a human baby), but the love they give to their owner is like nothing else.

All dogs are excellent dogs. The question you need to ask is, "Would a Chi be good for me?" Do the research. There's tons of information about various breeds online. Call your vet and ask them questions. You might even find a reputable breeder in your area. Make an appointment with them to go see their pack. They may be able to answer some of your questions. Just remember that no matter what size dog you have, it must walk. Alot of folks are going out there and putting their dogs in these cutsie purses. No, please don't do that. If you want a doll, go to the store and buy one. Chi's and any other dog is just that, these are dog's not baby humans. Yes you can give them affection, but not until you give them water, food, training and shelter. Water and food = love. Get the pup to obedience class (puppy class) as soon as you can. This will help to make your dog a friend of the neighborhood and you a proud parent.

I have one. Do your research!!! They are not the dog for everyone. As a rule, they do not do well with small children - or any children for that matter (though some individuals are fine).

They can be very hard to housebreak (mine took two years to break). They are notorious for having "little man syndrome" - and can be bossy saucy little dogs. I would not recommend one for a first time owner - as they can really walk all over you behavior-wise. Typically, they are a one person or one family dog - and are very suspicious to aggressive to strangers.

Don't get me wrong - I love mine dearly...he is very loyal and has bonded very strongly to me (I would not trade him for anything, and love him like I would love a child) ...but he has been the most difficult dog I have had so far, and after having him for six years, we have finally come to an agreement that I am the boss - it has taken a lot of work and patience (he was a rescue).

So - look up the AKC info, talk to people who own them, and make sure you are willing and able to put up with their behavior. They can live a long time (15+ years), so consider that - I would not even think of having children until after my Chihuahua passes away...he despises children and is deathly afraid of them.

Hope some of that info helps...it is just that I have seen so many turned over to the shelter for bad behavior when they do not turn out to be what people expect. They are not a fashion accessory - as Paris Hilton would have most people believe!

I've never met one I liked. They might be cute as pups, but it seems the older they get, the more nasty they get. Although I will admit that I have little use for little dogs. I am convinced that they bite more than big dogs, you just hear about the big dogs because they do more damage.

I have a Doberman, who is about the sweetest dog I've ever met. Even friends of mine who don't really care for dogs like her. My late mother was afraid of Dobermans, still liked mine. She's 12 years old, and still has the same sweet temperament she's always had.

Not all chihuahuas are the same, every dog has their own personality the breed really can't define the dog. The behavior depends on alot of different things for example, the age and the kind of treatment it has been given.

If you like a dog that is Yippy and over-protective--this is the one for you!
They are precious but not usually the best around visitors or children---They tend to bite easily and sneer often!
They need to be an inside only dog!
They are smart dogs and are fairly easy to train...you just cant get the "attitude" out of them!

They aren't very good family dogs. If you have little kids or anything they may not be the best choice. Chihuahua mixes are good though.
