that still says please and thank you, sir and ma'am, opens the door for the next person behind you leaving or entering a building, will pull over to help someone on the side of the road, goes by the "golden rule", takes off their hat when entering a building, looks people in the eyes, smiles politely at someone walking by...

Indeed my fair lady, For I practice this very behavior every day and find it very satisfying.
If those that have not partaken in such behavior would simply give this said behavior 1 wk. I believe that their would be a whole lot more love and peace in are world!!!!!!

I try to do these things all the time, although sometimes I'm so wrapped up in my own worries or hurried schedule that I forget... but the main reason I'm writing is to let you know that I'm on the receiving end of these wonderful gestures very frequently where I live (North County, St. Louis, MO). I wanted you to know that yes, there are people out there that still do these kind and caring things, and I knew it would make you happy to know that because you are clearly a warm person who is sensitive to other people's feelings and needs. Finding you through this question is another blessing I've received today -- thank you!

i say please and thank you, Sir and Maam, open the door for the person behind me, will help sometimes help people on teh side of the road... but can't be too nice with that one cause don't know who could be waiting in bushes (yes i am paranoid). as far as golden rule... i try..but don't always succeed, don't wear hats, look most people in the eye, will smile at others.... etc etc etc.
i think though that as a society we have gottne worst...just cuase we have allowed ourselves to. No one questions rudeness anymore. sad but true.

Some but not all. I am addicted to my hat...so where is most of the time. Most time I am going somewhere so cannot stop...(ie work). Other then that yeah. Now in somecases I do not hold th door. If they are further away they may feel compelled to run. So instead of makeing them run I will let them get to the door at their own leisure and open it.

yes i do, and i am teaching my children common courtesy also. It annoys me so much when you are waiting for a table at a restuarant and young people do not get up out of the chairs in the waiting area and offer them to the elderly and pregnant. I have offered my table to a woman with children before because I know how hard it is to keep kids entertained while waiting. A little common courtesy and compassion goes a long way.

I do all of the above, except stop for breakdowns on the freeway. Too many crazies out there, and you never know what could happen. If it's an accident, I'll call 911 as I drive by, but for a flat or something relatively minor, no, I will not stop.

I was wondering the same thing today when I went to the DMV and the lady at the counter was so rude to me. I simply asked her for a CDL medical form and asked if I had to give a copy to the DMV after the doctor fills it out. She looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Whatever your employer wants you to do," in the most obnoxious tone ever.

So I just looked at her, smiled, and said, "Thank you mam. I appreciate your help. Have a great day."

I do, and thank you for asking.

I'm one of those infuriating people that knows which utensil to use at a table and what the side plate is for.
I wear caps, so I tap them when I pass elderly people. That's how I was raised.
People talk about "barbaric cultures" but my definition of "being a barbarian" is not practicing what are good manners within your particular culture/society.
Good etiquette- whatever it is in your society- is what keeps us civilized. Too bad a lot of people now act like Conan.

Yeah, your describing my dad, who will be 85 yrs old this year. He says most women don't seem to like the doors open for them. But he's still an old gentleman.

I do! I was raised to treat people with respect and kindness. Don't get me wrong, I don't tolerate poor service, but I always try to leave people better than they were before I came in contact with them.
