I would like to buy an oven safe deep bowl type dish (preferably with lids) that holds about 4 cups. I am wanting to fill them with chili and then top with cornbread mix and bake. Im just not having any luck finding what I want. So I guess my Q is," What are these vessels called and where can I buy some?"

It would be called a 1 quart casserole dish. If you are planning to use a quart of product I would use a larger container (6C) or and 8"x8" baking dish to allow for the expansion that will occur during cooking. Any of the major ___-Marts would have them cheap (w/lids) by themselves or in a set (my favorite store for generic cooking supplies is Target).

You can purchase Pyrex cookware or CorningWare at some large supermarket chain stores, department stores, culinary supply stores, on-line.......Some are sold in sets, or separately; bowls, square or rectangular baking dish, casserole dish, etc.

Look for a 9" square Pyrex dish, w/ handles formed into 2 sides. Usually have a tight-fitting plastic lid (that doesn't go in oven!) but is great to seal it for leftovers.

hon buy them anywhere you buy baking goods. It's one litre by the way, and most times both units are featured. I usually buy them a bit larger than what I need. I suggest a 1.5 litre dish for you.
