Yes, they do work.
However, some of these system produce harmful byproducts like ozone (O3). And ozone in excess can cause damage to your skin and other parts of your body.
The best thing you can do is change your home air filters on a regular basis. And, for extra protection you can buy hepa filters for your home system.
If you need additional cleaners, I would purchase a portable centripetal fan air filtering system. These systems usually make more noise than the ionic cleaners sold by sharper image and oreck (and others) they produce less ozone, cost far less, and you don't need to run them all the time.
When shopping for a portable filter system check to see if the filters are HEPA rated and verify that it has a multistage filtering system that includes a carbon filter. The carbon filter helps with odors and the HEPA filter traps very small particles (germs).
You can find an affordable system, less than $100 with backup filters, at Walmart, Kmart, etc...
Take Care.

Air purifiers works.
You need to get the right type. You need to clean it regularly. They work best in a enclosed space.
Get one that both filter dust particles and odours. They will have what you called Hepa filters for micscroscopic dust removal and activated carbon filters for odour removal. Some have ultra-violet bulbs inside to kill virus and bacteria.
Try to avoid ioniser type as improperly design ones can leave dust particles
sticking to walls and furniture because of the electrical charge.
Last but not least get one with low noise.

There are some marvelous reward to air purifiers. only make specific you get a competent one in spite of the indisputable fact that. the concern maximum folk discover with greater much less high priced fashions is that the don't have good filters. the whole theory of the air purifier is to take the pollens, mildew, mold and different risky brokers out of the air we breathe.

They work. But, if you do get the ionic air purifier, you should make sure you have proper ventilation in the house/room so that you don't have high ozone level inside the room. Ionic air purifiers emit ozone as a byproduct of ionization. High ozone level is not healthy.

Consumer Reports tested the well-known "ionic" air purifiers and discovered they were basically useless, in fact they gave off unhealthy ozone. (My laser printer creates quite enough ozone.)
They rated Whirlpool and Kenmore/Sears room air cleaners (box type, with replaceable filter) the best. (I'm a subscriber.)

Wich ever brand or method you choose will do just as well as the other. The key is to find one that can handle enough volume to do the whole hoouse instead of just one room.
