My question is about the characters for North Korea...are bei(3) han(2) the correct characters...when I try to get a translation on line they always give me more characters. Maybe this is an abbreviation?? It's from a newspaper headline.

Yeah, I think the characters you are looking for are 北韩. It is an abbreviation for north of South Korea (although I have never heard of such an abbreviation before). North Korea (the country) is called 朝鲜 (chaoxian) and South Korea (the country) is called 韩国 (hanguo).

Answers.com suggests 北韩 is a valid translation for traditional Chinese. I guess it would also be okay for mainland Chinese, especially in a headline (where there is a tendency to abbreviate anyway).

it gives you more characters from you to choose the correct word from. what software are you using? usually it is like this, many words might have the same ping ing right? but only different ing tiao, that's why if you key in a words' ping ing, words with similar ping ing will appear for you to choose from.
