Lot bigger opponents, but the idea is to be strong enough to deter attack, as is the idea with all standing armies. Israel is very differnt though. They are literally surrounded by people that want to wipe them - country & all citizens - from existence. They have nuclear weapons & outside coutries help them arm conventionally so that they will never be in a positon to use the nukes for survival. Taiwan is not in that category. I do hope they get stronger & stronger to prevent Chinese attack, but I worry how much defense spending such a small Island can endure to keep on par with a fledgeling superpower.

I think Israel's situation is a little bit different. Israel's enemies want to wipe Israel off the map and drive all Israelis into the sea(in their words). China has an issue with Taiwanese independence but they don't want to actually destroy Taiwan, just bring the island back under their influence. So the Chinese threats come and go, but it's been a long long time since China actually shelled Taiwan. Also, Taiwan is an island so that makes it that much simpler. The status quo of PRC and ROC agreeing to disagree seems to suit everyone just fine, so I think it will continue.

Taiwan might see itself as David going up against China as Goliath. I don't know how much support they get from their fellow Asian - Pacific nations, i.e. = Japan, S. Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, N.Z., but they were very upset when we formalized relations with Communist China back in the 80's - 90's ( anyone feel free to correct me on the chronology ). We did it because we felt that we were in a position to take China in hand & dissuade them from rushing in & invading Taiwan. At any rate, Taiwan felt like, & maybe still feels like we left them in the lurch. So they would understandably want to be in a position to stand up for themselves, until they could get some military assistance OR until the U.S. & Europe could persuade China to back down IF they ever decided to add Taiwan to their real - estate acquisitions.

yes with so many F-16's and a great air defence and has a good navy it's definitly gearing up to be a strong nation just like israel but all they lack is experiance something israel has a lot of. any lack in navy can be made up from japans and U.S.'s navy who would come to the rescue if china invades but taiwan is just such a good nation china watch out
