I am a new pet owner, so I don't know very much about the issue.

Short answer: Iam's animal's are treated as "LAB ANIMALS" not as pets. They spend their lives in enclosures and are not petted loved, played with. Not a fun life. People think of their own pet in that situation and it makes some people feel as if, somehow they are betraying man's best friend. I choose not to use Iams, keep in mind these dogs usually come from shelters, going from bad to worse.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing they do is charge too much or their products.

PETA is apparently upset because they don't make only vegetarian pet food, and they actually have real pets try the foods for taste. Apparently, PETA thinks IAMS should have >people< taste the food; like a person would know what a dog or cat would like. Heck, dogs and cats will eat feces if they think it smells good. Either that, or they think computers should taste test the food, but that is just so bizarre, I can't come up with any cute comments about it.

Addendum; OK, I just went and watched PETA's video. An interesting pastiche, if not really very educational. They had some grossly exaggerated descriptions. For instance, I didn't see any animals "piled on the floor". There were a number of dogs laid out next to each other on a tarp or blanket during some medical tests, and they were administering anesthetic through a mask. The caretakers were tasked with watching the dogs for signs of distress, and given simple emergency instructions, presumably to keep the dog alive until help could arrive. None of THAT was explained, of course. There were several seconds of a lone, cute kitten. I don't know WHAT that was supposed to represent; make the dogs look more psychotic or something ? The cage conditions weren't exactly ideal, but I've seen worse in some less well to do pet shops, and in volunteer run animal shelters.

They also didn't mention that IAMS makes their employees kneel on that hard floor while caring for the animals. But then, the employees are only human, so mistreating THEM doesn't matter.

I've never heard anything bad about that company. My oldest cat was brought up on Iams (until I had my son, then I couldn't afford it anymore). I would use that over any of the other brands out there, because you really do see a difference in the way the animal's coat looks. If the only thing they did was offend PETA then I say that's pretty good. I mean you test different foods on pets, so you know if the average house pet would like it or not....how else would there be any product to give your animals???

They do animal-testing for their foods, which many companies do. But from what I heard, the condition in which the lab animals are kept in is pretty deplorable. Also, they pose as providing a high-end diet for pets, which may be true, but they are owned by Proctor & Gamble, same company that makes everything from Diapers to Tide. They're just out to make a buck. In the long run, it's the same as the rest of the other dog foods out there. You're just paying more money for food that's not necessarily all that great. If you want a really great food, try the Fromm 4Star Nutrionals pet food. It is fantastic! My dog and cats have thrived on it. This food is completely natural, contains no by-products. It costs more, but your pet will live a better life because of it. This food even reversed my dog's kidney failure, stopped his allergies, and improved his mental well-being, he's like a puppy again at 8 years old.

Someone reported them for not caring properly for the pets they were testing their food on. The conditions were poor and they were in cages like at a shelter.
Since then they have improved and taken much better care of the animals they use for research.
