If he's going to have restriced physical activity or bedrest for awhile you may want to help him with things around the house such as cleaning, laundry, mowing the lawn, etc. It won't cost you anything and will give you a chance to visit with him. It's things that most people don't think about doing but are very appreciated. My mom had surgery when I was a kid and her friend came over and washed her window dressings. It was something that my mom really appreciated and couldn't do herself at the time.

It depends on several things. How long will he be in the hospital or recuperating afterwards at home? What kinds of things does he like or collect? He will probably be sleeping most of the day after the surgery. If he's going to be on pain medication, then reading material would probably not be useful in the beginning. Does he collect balls, trains, cars, etc. Perhaps a model plane or model car to put together unless he's going to be on oxygen, you don't want him using flammable glues if he's on oxygen or even in a closed hospital room. Maybe one of those small Etch-A-Sketch toys to doodle with in between naps or get him one of those stress balls that are really squishy. Those are things to while away a bit of time between naps or while he's having his blood pressure taken or tests while in the hospital and help relieve stress of being cooped up. If he will be more alert and likes them, get him a book of pencil puzzles that has a variety of puzzles like logic problems, cryptograms, figgerits, or a new puzzle craze is Suduko number puzzles. If he likes to read get him something like a Reader's Digest that has a variety of stories, but they are short, so he can read a little at a time and not get bored. I know one thing I loved when I was in the hospital were some sugar free York Peppermint Patties. I was very sick and my mouth tasted awful nearly the whole time I was there even when I could brush my teeth. Those are soft and refreshing and the sugar free ones taste just like the regular ones and they won't affect blood sugar levels if he is diabetic. Or you could get a small legos set. It might be for little boys, but big guys like them too and it gives him something creative to do a little at a time, if he's not feeling well. And sometimes, even guys like bright cheery flowers. Most large grocery stores carry nice small bouquets these days and at a reasonable price. And there are always Hot Wheels cars, he can roll around the hospital beside table! I know my ex-husband used to love playing with those as much as my son did. Guys of all ages usually like Hot Wheels. Hope this helps.

Books on Tape (Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter, etc) are a great way to pass time especially if one is confined to bed and has a lot of time on their hands. If he getss tired and dozes off, he can always rewind to where he left off. There are interesting titles to suit all tastes in literature, and it will help the time go more quickly.

Just being there for him is the nicest thing you could do. When he sees that you are available, and truly care, he'll let you know what he needs from you. You sound like a teriffic friend, and a caring person.
Hoping he has a speedy recovery.

When Ihad surgery the best thing I got was a month subscription to Netflix!!! It's only about $10 or so, and your friend will love it.
Good luck to him.

DOES HE LIKE CROSSWORD PUZZLES, SEEK AND FIND BOOKS, SODUKO BOOKS, PUT MOVIES IN THE BAG TO LET HIM KNOW YOU'LL SPEND A DAY WITH HIM WATCHING MOVIES. DOES HE HAVE ANY FAVORITE MAGAZINES, OR BOOKS? DOES HE LIKE TO PAINT OR DRAW- GET PAPER AND STUFF FOR THAT. FIND STUFF TO DO THAT HE CAN BE SITTING AND RELAXING WHILE DOING IT.
