My 2 year old female cat is extremely aggressive. She will allow no one to pet her unless she is sleepy or wants food. Much against my will, my mom got her front paws declawed, but she was mean before this. Now she uses her teeth instead of claws to shred anyone who gets on her bad side.. if she is agitated and someone sits near her, she attacks their arms or legs. However, she is kinder to strangers. When she gets to know someone she acts as if she owns them and then bites whenever she feels like it. If she is ever held (which rarely happens) she will hiss after a minute or two. But yet she still loves me, because she sleeps in my room and purrs maybe once a day only to me. How can I get her to stop showing so much hatred, and to be nice most of the time instead of just every once in a while? We treated her great when she was a kitten.. also, she is an indoor cat only. (And yes, she has been spayed.)

A two-year-old female cat is just reaching adulthood. The female cats can be very serious customers.

The behaviors you want to encourage need to be rewarded, and if possible, the behaviors you want to discourage should be ignored.

That's really unusual for a cat raised from kittenhood to be so aggressive. That's normally a sign of a cat that's been abused or traumatized at some point in life. I had a friend who had a cat that behaved much as you described, who would sit in my lap when I cam to visit, but then growl and hiss at me if I moved an inch. The friends cat HAD been traumatized years earlier by another visitor (who was never allowed back) but it had a lasting impression. Was the kitten ever roughly handled, especially by a child? Held/restrained consistently against her wishes? Cats are not inherently mean unless given a reason to be. And it defiitely sounds like anxiety-based behavior. Please think back over her lifetime and see what you can remember. You will just have to figure out "her terms" and work with those -- once she isn't feeling so threatened, and realizes you're making an effort, she might calm down a bit. That's a real puzzle. I wish you the best of luck, and please don't give up on her.

Hmm, I had a really aggresive girl once, she was fixed and not declawed. The only thing I can think of is how other people act towards her. Talking really helps soothe an animal, though they have no clue what we're saying, I have bonded with many mean kitties, by talking nicely to them and bribing them of course. She obviously doesn't trust most people, thats my guess. Also, just might be her peronality, and you'l have to live with it, it will calm down as she gets older though.

Whenever a cat has been declawed you have taken away one of it's natural defense mechanisms. So they tend to become biters.
They'll wrap their front paws around their prey, nip and hold partially with their teeth and try to "rake' their quarry with their hind feet. Which can do some degree of damage if the hind claws were left intact.
But they'll still remain affectionate to one and sometimes two individuals who they still "own".

just give her time and space, she will come around. Even she has been spayed, she still gets the urge to mate and will be very testy around this time.

Is she a tortie? I have one (they are almost always girls) and she is the same way. Aggressive and doesn't like to be messed with. She does love me however.
