She's 12 goign on 13 and doesn't really want any stuffed animals or other little kid things. She made it clear to me. She's talking about full on African things made in Africa collectibles. She prefers that it part of the Kenya project, so she can help the people who made the art.

Check out a shop called "ten thousand villages" all items sold are made by people from impoverished countries, and a good majority of the money goes to them. Also, find fabrics in animal skin prints, fake fur to make giant pillows out of for lounging on. wooden scuptures are good, and that tan linen color that all "safari people" wear. Dark wood baskets for storage. or mix up the colors of baskets, wicker trash can, bamboo blinds or some sort of screen. Large printed artwork of tribal symbols or masks. anything feathered. A good art project for the wall would be a painted on mural of the map of Africa in beiges and browns, like an old map. Or tea stain the porous (not glossy) side of posterboard and let her create her own map of Africa to frame. You can do a cheap large frame by buying some casing from home improvement stores and painting or staining it to whatever color you want. Just get a handy type person to put the pieces together to make a custom fit frame. Get sand in different shades of brown and white, and layer them in clear jars. leave enough room at the top to put a tealight inside. do the same with stones.

Hey, I come from Africa and I know what would be an African theme-sort of. But you can find some of the colourful patterns that the African people put on their huts. Just to give you an idea, there's a culture group in South Africa called the Ndebele, and if you see a pic of one of their huts you'll see their great use of patterns and colours, just to give you an idea. Maybe you can try google to see what is unique to Kenya. The only other thing I can think of is if you do a sort of safari theme to her room because there are game areas (safari places) practically all over Africa. Just check out 'safari' on google. But I hope I helped anyway, it's a great i dea that she's come up with.
P.S. a few other little things you can add is maybe some shields and spears used by the warriors and those animal skin drums, I like those. The whole idea is just to have a lot of patterns, but not with too much colour!
