What are the best "little white lies" your parents told you, when you were a little kid? And how did you react when you finally figured out that you'd been tricked?

When I was little, maybe 5 or 6, my parents told me that if I told a lie, it would make my forehead change color. I couldn't see it, but grownups could. I even tried telling myself a lie while looking in a mirror, but of course I couldn't see the color change! Of course, I eventually learned that my forehead NEVER changed color, and that my parents could just read my "body language".

Funniest part of all: my sister is married and has 3 little boys (one's just a few months old, the middle one's 3 years old, and the oldest is almost 6). One day, when I was visiting them, my sister asked my oldest nephew something (had he hit his little brother, etc). My nephew COVERED HIS FOREHEAD and replied, "no, mommy." I laughed like crazy, because my sister had obviously used the same trick on my nephew!

How cute!!

My dad used to keep a shotgun in his bedroom closet. He knew I liked to snoop around when I was little, so his plan was to make me scared of the vacuum and then put the vacuum in the closet next to the gun. He used to tell me that the vacuum monster was going to suck me up. He knew that if I was scared of the vacuum and I knew it was in the closet, I wouldn't go near it. It worked until I was about 6. It wasn't the safest of ways to keep me away, but hey.

I don't remember any lies except Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. When I found out the truth about those two (in 3rd grade) I was so disappointed that my PARENTS had lied to ME.
