I use the professional hair dye from the bottle. Yep, TWO bottles. I have dark brown, semi-thick, straight hair and I usually dye it "light ash brown." Why can't it change? Well, it does a little but not noticably. What can I do?
By the way, I do do it right. I have my friend's sister do it FOR me with professional products.

I think it would be hard to dye such dark hair a lighter shade without using bleach.

I've seen people who've had it done at salons, and even then it often looks weird.

Try putting blonde or red streaks in it.

You really can't dye dark hair a lighter color without bleaching it first. Either you bleach it and deal with the damage or leave it alone.

1. Do you have well water?
It sounds like you may have a build up of some sort on your hair preventing penetration of the pigments. You should visit a beauty school or beauty salon and ask for a professional assessment!
Good luck and eat more peanut butter!

sometimes hair dye just doen't take on certain people, also it could be the color your using, try varrying the color a bit. make sure you don't wash your hair for atleast the day before. super clean hair isn't good. also you can try leaving it in for a slightly longer period of time.

it's hard to go light from dark, you usually need to bleach it first... which i wouldn't recommend if you didn't know what you were doing.... bleaching can go horribly wrong...
