I mean other than the origin of life or a higher power, supreme being, intelligent designer.

I'll address it now since I know it will come up.

I am an atheist and I do not know what the origin of life is. I feel that creationism, intelligent design, and evolution are interesting beliefs and theories, but none have definitive evidence of the origin of life.

Maybe I should have asked; Of all the things in life you are certain of, what else is only backed up by faith in your beliefs? Other than the origin of life, higher power.

Evolution through natural selection, as far as I know, is fact. It does not, however, show or claim to show proof of the origin of life which was my point.

You need faith to have knowledge of other human beings. You need faith to be able to trust anyone. You need faith to learn, since most of what you know, you believe on the authority of others. You need faith to continue living with zest in the face of the inevitability of suffering and death (your own and that of those you love) and the constant risk of crushing loss. You need faith to be inspired by beauty and to know that it has real meaning and is not simply a random association of particles. You need faith to struggle against your inclination to do things that your conscience condemns.

Hmmm, faith is kind of a weird term. I suppose that faith is belief without proof, but I would call that blind faith, particularly if that faith didn't makes sense based on things that have been proved. I'm not an atheist (might as well be faith that God doesn't exist) but I think that most religions are totally ridiculous. I suppose I do have faith to an extent, faith in science. However, when something that I believe in is disproved I'm intrigued and want to learn more about it. I take all things into consideration, then decide weather or not to change my beliefs. This is one of the major problems that religious people have. They are told by their holy books that there is only one truth and that it's all spelled out for them in the book (Bible, Koran, Torah, etc.) and not to question it. But ultimately when it comes down to it, we have faith in our senses. How do we really know that what we see is really there? Because other people see it? How do we know that they are there? Because we see them? How do we know that we see them? Whenever we dream, doesn't it usually feel as if it's actually happening even if it makes no sense? What if life is just an elaborate dream that we can't wake up from until we die? Ultimately it takes faith to believe in anything at all.

I wonder really if you are an athiest Bob, you sound like you are looking for answers.. I had a look at your profile and you are asking and answering religeous questions.. I am I suppose not really a believer in anything. What I do know is how much hurt some people do to others.. (generally speaking) and how hard it is to get a proper conversation about religeon without arguements.. life is strange Bob.. anyway.. must go now as it's late and my insomnia needs a bit more awakening..

Of the theories you mentioned, evolution is the only one with overwhelming evidence. In fact, with all that we know, it would be irresponsible for the scientific community to say evolution by Natural selection is anything less than a scientifically verifiable fact of life.

The proof is in the pudding. lets say your outside at say a campground and you found something as complicated and complex as say a cellphone. And you pick it up and some other guy walking by sees you picking it up and that guy tries to convince you that it formed itself over a period of millions or billions of years totally by chance. And coincidence. I have to wonder if you might disagree and think that it was actually made by a person who used a thought process and the tools available to them to make it.

My Faith only comes through my personal relationship with Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. Who, while I was still lost and a Sinner loved me enough to die for me.

Thanks for your honesty. None of us really know. We all just believe. Right? Everyone can pull up some really good evidence to back up their beliefs. Then each one that believes something different can shoot it down.
The bible does talk about "scoffers" in the end times who will not believe in the flood or creation.

I have faith God exists......faith defined as believing without seeing. I also have faith in my marriage. I believe my wife will be faithfully devoted to me and I to her for the rest of our lives. Do I "see" her 24/7 to know for sure this is happening. No. But, I gotta believe.....

If you want to look for a common ground then examine how important is the idea of trust. Religion is also here and now.
