They excrete (emit) a chemical that eats or digests whatever they want to "suck up" and yes, they usually leave crap on it too. I was in one persons house once, and since I'm obbsessively clean, I got a washcloth to wipe some "rust" off their refrigerator. It wasn't rust, and so I simply threw the rag in the trash and waited outside where it was cleaner.

This could be true but they mainly land on places where there is food and water and spend a good part of their day eating the food and water they land on. Whatever bacteria they are carrying, they will trnamitt from their mouths when they land on the surface, as they try to lick up or eat what they find. Most of us will not get sick from what they transmitt, however, because of our immune systems.

I think that even though they may seem disgusting to humans, they are doing their jobs so efficiently and I appreciate what they do. They are only helping decompose things. Without them things could just rot forever.
