"Know thyself". You've got to understand who you are first. That means, your interests, your skills, your passions, your personality type...Don't ignore any of these. (Myers-Briggs is good. Don't trust the Kinsey on-line version. There are many other tests for all these categories)
Take tests to evaluate your traits. Don't rely on self-assessment, it's easy to fool yourself. Besides, people usually don't "know what the like" they "like what they know". You may be a whiz in math, but do you really want to be an engineer?
Ask people you trust. Ask several. People will often try to direct you to what THEY want. I know an abusive pastor who is this way. He's in the wrong job, and he's become abusive because he's miserable. Get several opinions and look for a common thread.
Don't look for a career, look for your "vocation". That translates to your "calling". You'll be happy, whether you're rich or not.
Don't ever stop trying to learn about the world and about yourself. You'll change thru the years, and you may change careers as you follow your calling.

Write down a list of what you do best and what you like to do. For example, if you like to play piano, and you're good at it, you can become a proffesional piano performer, or examiner. Then when you have all the things you like to do written down, search for them on the web, or determine what jobs you can do with them from your own knowledge.
Then compare them, decide which brings in more money, which is more affordable, which suits your living style and schedule, which you prefer to the other, and so on. Then try them out! Don't be afraid to go out there and do what you want to do.

As in how do you know which line of work suits you most? I would say attempt to seek employment in a few different fields. Cos only then you are more or less able to to tell what type of job suits you most. For instance like me, I've just graduated and am doing Admin related duties for my first job. Into my first week and I already I know I wouldn't wanna be stuck with such mundane stuff for the rest of my life. So, try out different jobs while you are young. Then it will be easier for you to gauge your prefered line of work.
