It's 4yrs old and healthy and has never done this before. It has toys and things in his cage. Just wondering why now it would be biting and tearing bits of the perch. Should I be worried? Is this a phase or breeding/hormonal thing that will pass?

Rainbow lorikeets are high energy birds! They LOVE water and toys they can play with their feet. Get a golf ball sized WIFFLE ball, (its plastic like a golf ball in size, with holes all over it) The bird will go absolutely crazy once it realizes its a toy.. -many of these things have bells inside them which REALLY makes them enjoy flinging them around the cage. They will scream at them, bite them throw them hard against the cage; but if the cage is big enough to place a glass pieplate into the bottom of the cage and fill it with half full of water (room temperature) and get out of sight... (after putting the wiffle ball in the water dish)

Stay out of sight and watch the bird.... I promise you it wont take very long for the bird to be flopping and splashing and screeching, chasing that ball everywhere, laying on its back... flapping its wings, diving through the water, hanging onto the ball.... I am telling you it will be gut-busting.

AND.... if the bird doesn't do it the first try, just keep the dish full of clean water,( yeah i KNOW lorikeets are very messy birds, but if you want your bird to exercise and ENJOY life more, try this. I promise you sooner or later, it WILL one day do what I said it would). Just keep the waterdish clean...

Give him some different toys. Buy manzanita perches which are indestructible. You can make little balls out of 3 pieces of paper which lories can throw around for a day and then destroy. I usually give my lories a piece of newspaper to tear up when I change their paper. They also love those little plastic cat balls, the open weave ones--you can get them for a dollar or so each at a discount store. Perfect size for throwing around. Dollar stores are great to get things like baby toys (the hard ones, not the gel ones) and baby chain links to entertain your lorikeet--they are brightly colored which lories LOVE. My 18 year old rainbow lorikeet still has his original toy, a set of plastic baby fish on a ring, and he still loves it. Lorikeets are active and smart and need stimulation or they get bored.

He just suddenly got interested in it, maybe he likes the taste of it. Do you give him a variety of food other than just the seeds? Any fruits, veggies, pasta? birds love pasta, don't give him too much, but your bird should have some variety of those things. Look online for what lorikeets love to eat other than seeds and what they shouldn't eat.

Lories and lorikeets eat fruit and nectar. You can feed them baby foods instead, like fruit creams for babies (you mix the powder with water, make the cream, and put it in the bird's bowl).

Get him all kinds of natural perches with the bark on (make sure it's from a "safe tree" variety, and one which hasn't been sprayed with pesticides). Let birdie go gangbusters. Let him get it all out.
