Columbus was not the first. As far as I know native Americans did not have any formal immigration policy or laws. In fact, they welcomed the new comers almost without exception. This would lead to their eventual slaughter and cultural demise. That should be the lesson.

No, when the first wave of settlers came here they were not looking for jobs or a better way of life. Europe was at the top of its game. They were in the "new world" on a quest to expand their empires,to obtain wealth and power. The explorers wer here as explorers and traders. They set up colonies that brought in lots of revenue for their motherland. They were not illegal because the Native Americans did not have a centralized government and laws. I get a kick out of those claiming that we are all immigrants and have no right to tell anyone that they can't come here illegally. Listen, all of Mexico and Latin America wouldn't be speaking Spanish if it weren't for the Conquistadors form Spain raping an pillaging the native Inca, Maya and Aztecs civilizations. So, before anyone tells Americans how terrible we were to steal the land from the natives and build this country where everyone is so desperate to come to, think twice about world history.

The truth is that there was no law against immigration in the USA in 1492 and for that matter there was no USA to even make a law against it. There was no illegal immigration in 1776 when the USA began either. The first immigration law on the books was in 1875 barring convicts and prostitutes. So, to answer your specific question: No, illegal immigration didn't start "this" country in 1492.

Immigration, with no sense of the rights of the indigenous peoples, started in 1492. The habit of the outsiders claiming another land and subjugating its peoples continues to this day; ask the peoples of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria . . .. We do not own the United States as gokart121 suggests above: try selling a piece of land you simply like! The prejudice towards immigrants is not new this decade. Every wave of immigrants has been greeted with less than open arms. Did your grandparents talk of signs in businesses or hostels with signs reading "No [fill in the blank] need apply. Country of origin, religion. Even those brought here as slaves have been treated as inferior to other immigrants. Let s welcome people as people. Let s remember our own ancestors and greet the newcomers as you would hope others in the past would have greeted them,

u guys are all so stupid saying it was not an ilegal procedure since "there was no laws"
that phrase is a poetic construction made to remark a point . It is not a literal thing.
The point is directed toward those mostly white people who claim their right over others to be on a specific land and rely on laws that where imposed during colonial times to omit and take advantage of the wide presence of multiple cultures in the places they occupied. Im talking about america, which is not the united states only. It is a continent.

No. There is more than one reason for this depending upon your point of view. First of all, the Indians immigrated here via the land bridge through Alaska. Second, for immigration to be considered illegal, there must be a system of laws which provide for such a denotion. There were no such laws.

No, in order to break the law there has to be one. Back in 1492 there was no law on immigration.

Actually my viking ancestors cruised by and wasn't impressed with the native women so passed up America. Unlike the low life Spaniards who raped and pillaged the Aztecs Inca and Mayas, so that makes Mexicans bastards right? The American natives made the grave mistake of welcoming strangers....that's why we won't make the same mistake with Mexicans! Bye the way; LaContessa kinda looks like a viking, but I believe her to be of Spanish descent.

Absolutely. No local American wanted any invaders to steal their land. Now the descendants of those criminals call us-hardworking people coming to this country for better life- funny names like " illegal". Hello, how did YOU get your citizenship, did you deserve it in ANY way? You don't even know your own history and given a INS simple history test, 90% of "Americans" would fail...
